Nina was an incredible composer, pianist, singer. Man, did she have a hard life. She was denied entry into Juliard because of her color back then, and got started playing clubs to pay the bills. My favorite is Wild is the Wind, also covered by David Bowie. In his biography, they once met and had a great conversation. Another favorite is Love Me of Leave Me. Her piano composition is amazing and takes you to new places…I wonder how her brain can orchestrate those keys.
She was also an activist and used her music as a vessel for messages of love, strength, and unity.
She wasn’t the kindest person all of the time, but she also suffered from Bipolar and alcoholism and up to the end of her life, it was rough. She holds a dear place in my heart.
